Getting into FIFO

Does FIFO drug test for weed? Yes. Here is how, and how long it shows up

Yes. When they test, how the tests work, how long cannabis shows up, and what to do about prescribed medicinal cannabis.

Short answer: yes. Every serious site tests for drugs and alcohol, and cannabis is the one people get caught on most. Here is how it works from the hiring side.

When they test

Before you start, as part of the pre-employment medical. Randomly, once you are working. On some sites, before or at the start of a swing. And after any incident, whether or not you caused it. If you are thinking you can time it around a roster, you can’t.

How the tests work

Australian workplaces mostly use two kinds. A urine test, done against the Australian standard for urine testing, which shows use over a longer window. And an oral fluid (saliva) test, which mostly shows recent use. Some sites use one, some use both. A non-negative on-site screen usually goes to a lab to confirm.

How long cannabis shows up

It varies a lot from person to person, so treat these as rough. In urine, occasional use can show for one to two weeks, and regular use for several weeks, sometimes a month or more. In saliva, it is usually about a day, sometimes longer for heavy users. That is why pre-employment testing catches so many people: they stopped, but not long enough.

I can’t tell you a safe date and nobody honest can. If you use, stop well before you apply, and stay stopped.

What about medicinal cannabis?

A prescription does not automatically clear you. Many sites treat THC as a fitness-for-work issue regardless of why it is in your system, especially in safety-critical roles. Talk to your doctor before you apply, find out the site’s procedure for declaring medication, and follow it. Be aware that some CBD products can contain THC.

Things that will make it worse

Detox drinks, diluting a sample, or swapping one. Labs check for this, and tampering is usually treated the same as a positive or a refusal, which is the end of the application. Refusing a test is treated as failing it.

The bigger picture

The medical also checks hearing, lungs, vision and whether your body can handle the role, and some prescription and over-the-counter medicines can show on a drug screen too. Everything you need to sort before you apply is in the FIFO pre-employment medical and drug test.

General information only, not medical advice. If you have a prescription or a health question, talk to your GP.
